how to: level up your style

Writer's picture: Sydney Daigle Sydney Daigle

Fashion is the clothes you buy. Style is what you do with that fashion.

Your style is a form of self-expression. What do you want yours to say? Do you want to be sporty? Or trendy? Or professional? The way you present yourself through your clothes gives other's a view into you as a person.

As a college student, I often find myself wearing what ever is comfortable, or clean, which can lead to some boring outfits. I can only wear a University of South Carolina shirt and Nike shorts so many times. My goal for myself this summer and next semester is to level up my style. As TikTok once said, "I don't dress cool so men with pay attention to me. I dress cool for 13-year-old-girls will walk by me down the street and whisper to their friends, 'Did you see that girl's outfit. She looks so --- cool.'" It is time for me to rise to the challenge. I always have a couple trendy pieces in my closet that match together for one perfect outfit, but what if my whole wardrobe os those trendy pieces?

I decided to start on a journey to begin the search for some pieces. My first stop was Pinterest. There is so much creative content on this platform it is ridiculous. I started creating boards for various things that could impact my style and/or aesthetic. My favorite series of boards is my monthly favorites. The pins do not necessary fit in any of my other boards. They are just pictures that I think are cool. I also enjoy seeing how my eye for content changes each month. My April Favs 2020 is filled with lots of earthy pictures and summer inspired content, but my developing June Favs 2020 board is comprised of 70's inspired content. What I was drawn to drastically changed in just two months.

From the runway to my closet is my style board which gives me outfit inspiration. Pictures come from brands that use the platform, VSCO posts, and Instagram influencers. It is a nice variety, and it lets you compare many styles at once. Recently, I have saved a lot of blues and athleisure meets model-off-duty looks.

Next, I followed fashion bloggers on Instagram. My two favorite accounts are @fashionpostsok and @vitaliia. Fashionpostsok posted content from multiple creators on one easy to find place. Vitaliia is a Canadian blogger, who wears chic, urban outfits. I like seeing what other people are wearing and making my own spin on it. Since it is summer time, there is more creative freedom because I am doing more around town, instead of going to and from classes. Based off my timeline, I have noticed to common threads. Small Crocodile purses are very in style right now and are all over my timeline. Mules are also making a return to the fashion scene this year. When I find outfits I like, I save them to a Saved Post Collection on Instagram. This lets me keep my inspiration in one place, similar to a Pinterest board. To keep up with multiple fashion accounts, I made my own Instagram where I re-share outfits that I think are trendy.

When it comes to picking outfits, here are somethings I have been loving and keeping in mind recently:

  • gold accessories, especially small hoops & dainty necklaces

  • nike socks with sneakers

  • statement sunglasses

  • monochromatic outfits

  • my denim purse

  • Can I wear a hair silk/ accessory with this?

  • Would I wear this out in Los Angeles/ NYC where street fashion is top-notch?

  • What hairstyle will best complement this look?

These three steps have led me to style some trendier outfits. I recently donated some old pieces to help get money to buy new pieces. I hope y'all use these tips to level up your style and embrace your inner-fashionista!
